The Global Sanitation Fund estimates that 90% of the 1.8 million people who die annually
from simple diarrhea are children under five. They state that the
safe disposal of children's feces would reduce those deaths by nearly 40%.

According to UNICEF, 42% of the world's population defecates in the open or in unsanitary places.

From the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council:

• "Over the past ten years diarrhea has killed more children than all the people lost in armed conflicts since the Second World War."
• "Around 800,000 people in India still personally remove feces from latrines."
• "Clearly, access to sanitation services has enormous potential to improve and save lives."
